'We Are The World' Remake Premieres Tonight During Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies
"We Are the World — 25 for Haiti" is set to premiere on Friday night (February 12) during the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Vancouver. The song features appearances by a number of artists including Janet Jackson, Justin Bieber, Jordin Sparks, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Pink — along with some newly added artists who won't be revealed until the remake airs. But while we wait for the debut of the Haiti benefit, organized by Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones, we have a preview from the people behind the song.
"I just keep the class of the original one," producer RedOne told MTV News, explaining how "We Are the World" would differ from the club tracks he's made with artists like Lady Gaga. "But I didn't want to change any course. I didn't want to mess it up, because it's too good. I tried to keep it on the same level and tried to make it sound more now and current. I kept the whole chord progressions, the feeling and the vibe, but brought fresher sounds that are more now."
One update that the original didn't include, however, is a heavy rap presence, with Wayne, West, Will.I.Am, T-Pain, Bizzy Bone, Kid Cudi, LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg, Drake, Mann, Nipsey Hussle, Busta Rhymes and Swizz Beatz all lending their voices to the track. Wyclef Jean also said he added a "Haitian influence" to the song.
The video's director, Paul Haggis, also spoke to MTV News about his involvement in the project and admitted he "embraced the chaos" of shooting everyone from Celine Dion to Kanye West, most of whom recorded the track on February 1 in Los Angeles.
"You hear these stories about people checking their egos at the door, and it really is true," the "Crash" director explained. "They came and stood forever and were glorified extras a lot of the time. They just stood in the corner and waved."
Even in a room full of stars, the participants put the cause, helping raise money for Haiti's earthquake recovery, above all else. "It was hot and it was crowded," Haggis said, but as a director, he was almost disappointed by how well everyone got along. "When there's chaos, there's friction. Where there's fiction, there's drama, and I knew I'd have fun things to shoot. Unfortunately, there wasn't as much drama as I expected. People really got along very well."
The video was shot in 3-D, and green-screen technology will eventually allow viewers at home to place themselves in the chorus. "You would think we have a full-blown motion picture going in there," Richie marveled at a press conference earlier this month. "We have 3-D cameras, we have Technicolor cameras, we have every imaginable form of technology. You can put yourself into the 'We Are the World' family from the computer."
The other "We Are the World" artists include Miley Cyrus, Wyclef Jean, Jamie Foxx, Josh Groban, Keri Hilson, Zac Brown Band, Akon, Brandy, Melanie Fiona, Mya, Musiq Soulchild, Katharine McPhee, Trey Songz, Faith Evans, Joel and Benji Madden, members of Sugarland, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Mraz, India.Arie, Mary Mary, Tyrese Gibson, Raphael Saadiq, Rob Thomas, Usher, the Fray's Isaac Slade, pianist Ethan Bortnick, Enrique Iglesias, Robin Thicke, Maroon 5's Adam Levine, the Jonas Brothers, Nicole Scherzinger, Julianne Hough, Barbra Streisand, Carlos Santana, Natalie Cole, BeBe Winans, Orianthi, Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, Freda Payne, Harry Connick Jr., Earth, Wind & Fire, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, Tony Bennett, composer A.R. Rahman, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, Patti Austin and Gladys Knight. Actors Jeff Bridges, Vince Vaughn and Jimmy Jean-Louis were there, as well as some "WATW" offspring: Nicole Richie (Lionel's daughter), "Parks and Recreation" star Rashida Jones (Quincy's daughter) and the members of 3T (the sons of Tito Jackson), Taj, Taryll and TJ Jackson.
All proceeds from "We Are the World" singles and video sales will go to the newly formed charity We Are the World Foundation LLC and will then be distributed to Haiti relief efforts.

Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan Likely at Winter Olympics Opening Tomorrow Night
The 2010 Winter Olympics may be lacking snow, but that hasn't stopped the leaks.
The first names of likely opening-ceremony performers have filtered out, thanks to spies at the rehearsals and a commercial for the Vancouver Games that aired during Saturday Night Live.
Canadians Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan and Bryan Adams all seem a lock for Friday night. Best bets are also rockers Rush and jazz singer Nikki Yanofsky, also both Canadians. The '80s band Devo will be among the bands performing at the Games' medal ceremonies.
The new all-star "We Are the World" video for Haiti earthquake relief will also air during Friday's Olympic coverage.

How did you go from songwriter to American Idol superjudge?
They were looking for a fourth judge, and they wanted to add someone who was in the industry. Plus, I'm known to be ballsy and outspoken. They knew I wouldn't clam up and go under the desk. Although I did want to, believe me!
Would you have auditioned for Idol when you were starting out?
Yes, but I don't think I would have gotten too far if I was, like, 20.
Are you missing Paula this season?
During the auditions, yeah, I missed her. She was so nurturing, and I try to have some of that in my critiques. I wouldn't say I have the maternal instinct that she had, though. I'm a little bit more New York, a little more hard-edge.
Does Simon ever lay into you the way he did Paula?
Definitely. It's hard for me to say something negative to a contestant without giving something constructive back, and that annoys Simon. But they're kids, and you feel for them - especially when they have a story, like they've overcome cancer or something.
Are you sad that it's Simon's final season?
I have no idea. All I can say is the guy can do things not many folks can get away with, and people like when someone is true to himself.
Are you happy about Ellen joining?
I was like, "Rock on!" Are you kidding? The thing with Ellen I don't think everybody understands is that she's a huge music lover. That's what you need to be on Idol.
Did you get a big response from male idol fans?
I got a couple of proposals and though maybe I'd want to divorce my husband. [laughs]

American Idol season 8 finalist Danny Gokey is getting ready to release his country debut album called My Best Days on March 2nd. Check out the album sampler which features about a minute of each song from his album. If you are a Danny Gokey fan on American Idol or a country fan, this album is for you. I wasn't a Danny Gokey fan when he was on American Idol, but I must say this is a good effort from him, its pretty good. If you rank the contestants who released an album from season 9 of American Idol, I would probably rank his album right third place right after Kris and Allison putting Adam album at last place, but that's just me and my opinion (bet none of y'all can accept my opinion so let the bashing begins). Moby Ditches Electrics For New Album
Moby is not using any electronic instruments on his new album, in a dramatic turnaround of his established sound.

The 'We Are All Made Of Stars' musician, who rose to fame with dance hit 'Go' in the 90s, is back in the studio and said he has already laid down the foundations for his next album in two days.
Moby wrote on his blog: "We just finished day two in the studio. Day one was spent recording drums, and today we recorded acoustic guitar and piano.
"I really like trying to record a record with such specific restrictions placed on the creative process. At present the one rule is: no electronics. So everything has to be playable/recordable in the acoustic realm (with microphones)
"There's something really satisfying about being in an old studio using old microphones and old pre-amps and an old mixing desk and recording in the way that people recorded 30 and 40 years ago."
Moby also said he's working on over 20 tracks for the follow up to last year's 'Wait For Me'.
He added: "Currently I'm working on about 24 songs, but I think I'll start narrowing them down soon. Some of the songs are older ('Whispering Wind', 'When it's Cold', 'I'd like to Die', 'Great Escape', etc), but most of them are new."
Moby also said although he doesn't know how the record will turn out, but he's having fun recording it.
He said: "I have no idea what the final record might sound like, but I'm really enjoying this process, a lot. At some point I have to find an orchestra and figure out how to record them. That should be the, uh, hard part."

Country Group Lady Antebellum "Needs You Now" Album Stays #1 2nd Week On Billboard
Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" stands tall at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for a second week, as the set shifts 209,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. Last week, the set bowed atop the list with 481,000, the biggest sales week for a country album since Taylor Swift's "Fearless" opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 592,000 copies in Nov. 2008.
Lady Antebellum's second week of 209,000 is down an expected 57% compared to its premiere week. Last year, most high-bowing country albums dropped by anywhere between 55-60% in sales in their second week. And, since Lady A performed the new album's title track on the Grammy Awards on Jan. 31, the album's second-week drop-off was softened.
The Grammy Awards hit a high note in the Nielsen ratings, with 25.8 million viewers -- the most for the show since 2004 and up 35% compared to last year's broadcast.
Speaking of the Grammy show, another of its performers, Lil Wayne, debuts at No. 2 with his oft-delayed "Rebirth" set, selling 176,000 copies. It's the seventh top 10 album for the hip-hop king, who was scheduled to be sentenced to a year-long prison term yesterday, but saw the sentencing delayed due to dental surgery.
Wayne of course saw his last album, "Tha Carter III," debut at No. 1 in 2008 with 1 million sold in its first week. "Rebirth" actually did better than initially projected, as last Tuesday (Feb. 2), industry prognosticators initially estimated that the album was going to sell in the neighborhood of 125,000 to 150,000.
The Grammy love continues with the chart's second-highest debuting album, Nick Jonas & the Administration's "Who I Am" at No. 3 with 82,000. The Jonas brother didn't perform on the Grammys, but he and his brothers Joe and Kevin did introduce another trio's performance -- Lady Antebellum's. Nick's proper solo debut also starts better than expected, as last week some observers had the album launching with around 60,000 to 65,000 copies.
The third and final debut in the top 10 is an act that, while not part of the Grammy Awards festivities, has been nominated multiple times previously -- Rob Zombie. His "Hellbilly Deluxe 2" starts at No. 8 with 49,000. The set is the rocker/director's first effort on Loud & Proud/Roadrunner after having spent almost 18 years with Geffen Records. Zombie's last studio set, "Educated Horses," opened at No. 5 with 108,000 in 2006.
As for the holdovers on the chart that populate the top 10 this week, all but one of them have an explicit connection to the Grammy Awards. (And even the one that didn't -- Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed at Dream" -- was joked about on the show by presenter and winner Stephen Colbert.)
Show-opener and two-time winner Lady Gaga sees her "The Fame" get pushed down one spot to No. 4, but sells 79,000 (up 17%). Outside the top 10, her "Fame Monster" EP drops two rungs to No. 12 with 34,000 (up 8%). The "2010 Grammy Nominees" compilation climbs three slots to No. 5 with 71,000 (up 55%), while performer and winner the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." jumps four spots to No. 6 with 70,000 (up 76%).
Taylor Swift, who not only won four trophies (two of them on air) but also performed on the show, sees her album of the year winner "Fearless" rise from No. 13 to No. 7 with 53,000 (up 58%). The aforementioned Boyle falls five spots to No. 9 with 46,000 (down 21%). Finally, best new artist winner Zac Brown Band reaches the top 10 for the first time with "The Foundation," as it climbs 12 slots to No. 10 with 40,000 (up 82%).
Outside the top 10, Grammy shines on a bevy of albums that make great strides up the chart. Among the most notable increases: Performer and winner Beyoncé rises 21 rungs to No. 14 with "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" (32,000; up 101%). Beyoncé won two trophies during the broadcast, along with another four during the pre-show, for a total of six wins -- marking the most by a female artist on one night in Grammy history. (Her total career haul? 16 -- the third-most of all female artists.)
Pink's show-stopping performance of "Glitter in the Air" aids the surge of her "Funhouse" album, which flies from No. 61 to No. 15 with 31,000 (up 234%). It also doesn't hurt that Pink chatted and performed on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Feb. 5. Record of the year winner Kings of Leon see its "Only by the Night" set jump from No. 39 to No. 24 with 24,000 (up 66%). Album of the year nominee (and performer) Dave Matthews Band rises from No. 93 to No. 47 with "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King" (13,000; up 114%).

British fashion designer Alexander McQueen commits suicide
London-born fashion icon Alexander McQueen has committed suicide.
The designer, largely considered one of the bright lights of British fashion, was 40. His death comes three years after the suicide of close friend Isabella Blow.

Long considered an enfant terrible of fashion—a label he loathes and one which, at the age of 39, should no longer apply—McQueen has seemed at various times in his career to work through his demons, but he has never completely done so. Sometimes a dark current would wend through even his most glorious shows; other times, a season of pure romance might be followed abruptly by a brooding display of melancholia or outright anger. Such was the mood of last fall’s Witches show, inspired by a distant ancestor, Elizabeth Howe, a victim of the Salem witch hysteria. It offered not Hawthorne-esque romance with some hint of redemption, but a study in vitriol expressed via fashion—an assault McQueen now considers at least partly a mistake.

Molly Shannon Joins ''Glee'', To Play Nemesis of Jane Lynch
Has Sue Sylvester finally met her match? Hint: Hell yes she has!
In yet another triumph for the casting gurus over at Glee, sources confirm to me exclusively that SNL vet Molly Shannon is joining the ensemble as a nemesis to Jane Lynch’s Sue.
Wait, it gets better.
Her character, Brenda Castle, is described as the busty 45-year-old new astronomy teacher and badminton coach at McKinley High School who is both an alcoholic and a pill-popper.
“She becomes Sue’s enemy,” says a Glee insider.
The role is recurring and Shannon’s first episode is slated to air in May.
BTW, Glee returns in 62 days. But who’s counting? Okay, I am.

John Mayer's Sexually, Racially Charged Playboy Interview Sparks Outrage
John Mayer, the singer/songwriter whose rocky relationships with stars like Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston are well-documented in the tabloids, sparked heated debate among his fans on Wednesday by dishing on all that -- plus his controversial feelings about race -- in the new issue of Playboy.
"That girl is like crack cocaine to me," Mayer said of Simpson. "Sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm. Did you ever say, 'I want to quit my life and just f---ing snort you? If you charged me $10,000 to f--k you, I would start selling all my s--t just to keep f---ing you.'"
Mayer also spoke on Aniston, denying the rumor that his current single "Heartbreak Warfare," from new album "Battle Studies," was inspired by his most recent ex. "That woman would never use heartbreak warfare," Mayer insisted. "That woman was the most communicative, sweetest, kindest person…when you listen to Coldplay, do you think about Gwyneth Paltrow? I don't write songs in order to stick it to my exes. I don't release underground dis tracks."
Released last November, "Battle Studies" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 792,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Heartbreak Warfare" currently sits at No. 57 on the Billboard Hot 100, while previous single "Who Says" peaked at No. 17 on the chart.
When asked how many woman he's slept with since splitting with Aniston, Mayer estimated, "four or five. No more. But even if I said 12, that's a reasonable number. So is 15. Here's the thing: I get less a-- now than I did when I was in a local band. Because now I don't like jumping through hoops." Later, Mayer recalls that "there have probably been days when I saw 300 vaginas before I got out of bed," though it's unclear whether those days are from the earlier or later stages of his career.
In the midst of sharing his thoughts on sex, Mayer also took time to give a few eyebrow-raising soundbites on race, particularly his strong African American fanbase and his predilection for Caucasian women, when it comes to matters of lust.
"I am a very…I'm just very. V-E-R-Y," Mayer said. "And if you can't handle very, then I'm a douche bag. But I think the world needs a little very. That's why black people love me."
"Someone asked me the other day, 'What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?" Mayer continued. "And by the way, it's sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n----r pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, 'I can't have a hood pass. I've never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, 'We're full.'"
"My d--k is sort of like a white supremacist," Mayer went on. "I've got a Benetton heart and a f---in David Duke cock. I'm going to start dating separately from my d--k."
Despite all this, Mayer insists, "I've never been a bad boy. I may have taken someone through the wringer psychologically, but I've never been sinister."
Mayer's interview has already sparked controversy on social networking sites like Twitter, where he was a trending topic on Wednesday afternoon. Taylor Swift Third Album Set To Be Released Later This Year; New Single Out Summer/Fall
Swift intentionally kept a low profile from mid-December until the Grammys. During that time, she stayed off the red carpet and in the recording studio, cutting an album's worth of material.
The first single from Swift's third album will go to radio in late summer or early fall, and the album will follow late in the year. "She was on an amazing writing spree through December and January, and we were able to go in and cut all those things," Borchetta says. "If she writes something great between now and July, it will go on the record. She's been extraordinarily prolific the last six months."
Swift's fans seem to have an insatiable appetite for her music right now. Two weeks ago, a new track, Today Was a Fairytale, sold 325,000 copies, the best download debut for any female act ever. The song appears on the soundtrack for the Feb. 12 film Valentine's Day, in which Swift has a small role.
Swift's sold-out North American tour begins March 4 in Tampa and runs into June.
Though Team Taylor is trying to limit her national appearances, Borchetta says, "as much as you try to pull back, there are some things you can't stop. We can't stop Us Weekly from snapping a picture of her and putting it on the cover."
Ultimately, losing song of the year to Beyoncé and record of the year to Kings of Leon at the Grammys might have been one of the best things that could have happened to Swift.
"I think she benefited from not having a sweep," says Los Angeles-based music journalist Chris Willman, who covered the Grammys for Yahoo! Music. "The media backlash would have been considerable. It's tough to rule from the perch of that kind of coronation."

Jewel New Album Out In Junwe
The Valentine’s Day soundtrack—which, like the movie, features a star-studded line-up (Taylor Swift, Willie Nelson, Amy Winehouse, and Leighton Meester all appear on it) hit stores today. And at last night’s premiere for the movie, Jewel talked to EW about her new country single, “Stay Here Forever,” which she contributed to the mix. “I heard the soundtrack folks were looking for one more song, and I submitted this one and they fell in love with it and made it the lead single,” Jewel says. “That’s pretty cool. I wrote it for my husband, Ty, and used how I feel for him as inspiration. It’s about being in love and how going on a great adventure is fun, but sometimes staying home with the one you love is even better.”
Jewel is also working on her next album—which she said will likely be out in June. “I am not quite finished with it but I am scheduled to put it out in June no matter what,” she says. “I have been cutting tracks in Nashville and finishing them at my ranch in Texas.”
So what’s the vibe of her upcoming disc? “It’s a little country,” Jewel says. “The Nashville and Texas vibes have found their way into the music for sure. There will be a lot of love songs on it, because I have always been influenced by what is happening in my life and right now I am in a very happy place.”
